Tidwell – Downsized, Unemployment and Social Responsibility

When big business downsizes and people are left without jobs, the stress of finding a new position and living without a job for awhile takes a toll on the former employee and the family. Life can be difficult but government can be there to help ——————

(When the nails stop screeching across the black board, you’ll realize the cost of the statement.)

“A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have.”

~ Gerald R. Ford

Gerald Ford, a wise man, had wisdom about the power of Government and an understanding that his position, as President of the United States, had more power than needed for the job he had to do. In a time when Americans needed a strong leader, Jerry Ford strongly believed the power of leadership was in listening to the people.

As a businessman with strong leadership skills, Cleve Tidwell has learned that he can’t make decisions without listening to the people on his staff. Looking down from the top, he doesn’t have the information required to make all the decisions. The best way to make decisions is to listen to the people who have the information in their hands, the people who are working in the fields, in the factories, on the sales floors, and behind the counters. They understand what needs to be changed, what needs to happen, and what would effectively make a difference in the business.

A business owner has the power to lead from the top of the mountain. But that power to lead from a position of blind ignorance is just the kind of power Gerald Ford spoke of in his quotation above. While taking care of the people inside the business (or the citizens of a government) may feel like the right thing to do, the cost is in the finality of an overgrown company (government) having to downsize when it becomes top heavy with decision makers and no workers.

“When people are given the power to make their own decisions and have freedom to choose their solutions, they choose to work and support themselves,” Cleve Tidwell states. “People understand the liberty of making their own choices and taking responsibility for their own actions. If they control the outcome, people are more willing to put extra effort into the job.”

Spreading the wealth seems like a nice bonus for the poor and downtrodden within a nation. But, if you want to empower the people, apply the old saying, “If you give a man a fish, he eats for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime.” People do not give from their poverty but rather from their abundance.

Government is NOT the solution for business downsizing or unemployment. By cutting the taxes people have to pay and eliminating the costly small business taxes, businesses will develop and new jobs will come from the freedom to develop new business. People will be amazed at the number of small businesses that spring up to meet the needs of downsized businesses because the services are still required. Those jobs didn’t disappear. The company just needs to change the way the jobs are done.
